Daryl’s passion for photography goes right back to primary school.

“I was seven or eight when I was given a camera for a school excursion and I’ve

loved photography from that day. I have pretty much documented my life and the lives of people around me ever since”.

At the end of school he left home and ran away to the sea, joining the Royal Australian Navy.

“The timing was right, I learnt a trade, got to see the world and, of course, photograph it – I cherish that time.”

Wanting to settle down and run his own life Daryl slipped quietly into Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula.

“There were no more uniforms, no more orders and I had freedom to grow my hair. It was like a breath of fresh air. I was in control of my life.

“Work as a refrigeration mechanic took me into and around Melbourne. I always had my camera and photographed the city for the first time”

“After years working out of St Kilda, the city’s romance faded. I enrolled in a photography course because it was time to follow my dream. Two and a half years later I graduated.”

Daryl quickly found work as a news photographer, working for a regional newspaper publishing group.

“I was stoked meeting and photographing different people every day. These constant assignments helped hone my skills and reaffirm my passion for this way of life.

“The archival nature of photography is of special interest, grabbing that moment and saving it forever, so future generations get a glimpse of past lives and events.

Daryl’s first wedding job was for a friend’s sister.

“What a blast. We had lots of fun. I found my photojournalist skills from newspaper work really came in handy. I knew how to relax the bride and groom so they were natural and happy. I shot that wedding like it was a job for the newspaper, making sure the images were telling a story. At the same time I was able to direct people when needed, setting up natural poses.

“A funning thing happens when you point a camera at people for the first time –mostly they will just freeze, straighten up and do anything but look relaxed. Years of news work and study taught me how to show people how to act naturally. Once shown the technique they get it right away and loosen up.”

That first wedding was over 10 years ago. Many referrals since have seen Daryl photograph more than 100 weddings.

“I love the joy of weddings and it’s a real privilege to be asked by a couple to record one of life’s biggest days. There’s so much trust in this partnership between the wedding party and the photographer. You can’t re-shoot a wedding can you? So, knowing that a couple has chosen me as their photographer … well it’s an honour”
